Method 1: Manual Method
This involves adding alt text directly to each image. To do this, simply double-click on the image, scroll down to the Content section, and look for the Image Alt Text field. Enter a descriptive text in this field, and your image will now have alt text assigned.

Method 2: Using Squarespace AI (New Feature)
Recently, Squarespace introduced a much faster way to add alt text using their built-in AI. To access this feature, go to the top-right corner of your Squarespace dashboard and use the search function. Type in “SEO” and click on SEO Appearance.

When you first land on the SEO Appearance page, you’ll see an SEO Overview section that provides a quick report of your site's current SEO status. One part of this report highlights images missing alt text.

To quickly fix this, simply click “Improve with AI”.

When you open SEO Appearance, you’ll first see tabs for SEO Titles and SEO Descriptions. Just go through these by clicking Next until you reach the Review Alt Text section.

Here, Squarespace displays all your site images that are missing alt text. For each image, the AI automatically generates a description, which you can either edit or regenerate if needed.

This is by far the fastest and most efficient method for adding alt text—especially if you haven’t done it manually during the site’s development.
