What is a 404 page?

A 404 page is what users see when they try to visit a URL on your website that doesn’t exist, has been removed, or has been changed. It’s a simple page that informs users: “This page doesn’t exist. You can return home by clicking here.”

On Squarespace, you can find the 404 page by navigating to Pages > System Pages > 404 Error Page. The image below shows the default 404 page on Squarespace.

Unfortunately, this page cannot be directly customized, but there are still some options available to make it more user-friendly. (Continued below.)

By clicking on the dropdown menu, you can actually change the page users land on when they reach the 404 error page. You can choose from any page you’ve created on your site.

A popular option is to set the 404 page to redirect to your homepage. This is a good choice because users will simply be taken to the homepage of your website when they click on a broken URL.

Alternatively, you can create a custom 404 page on Squarespace by creating a new, unlinked page named "404." This page can be fully customized to suit your needs. Once it’s ready, you can set it as the new page users see when encountering a 404 error.
